Musical Review:
Phantom of the Opera
Pantages 2015
This is my first
blog 'Musical Review' and I am not exactly and expert but I have a good sense
of when a show is a "SHOW". So i figured i would start my
review with one of the biggest show in Musical history, The Phantom of The Opera.
I like to break down shows into five sections Music/sounds, Visuals,
Acting, Story, My overall enjoyment of the show and then end with the total
score and my verdict. also i rate things on a five point scale. so
without further ado I begin:
Prologue:
My review is strictly
on the show I watched. Phantom is one of my favorite shows and it is
overrated and super popular for a reason. with that being said i am review the
Pantages show from the summer 2015.
Music: 4/5
The score was
amazing hearing the orchestration pulled me right into the experience of the
show it did exactly what it was supposed to. the music went perfectly
with everything that was happening. the singing on the other hand was
weak for the two leads. Phantom wasn't as strong as he needed to be it
seemed as if his voice was tired and that this wasn't the best place to see him
perform. Christine was really good she just wasn't great you know she
just had something missing. Rauol was spot on he was born to play that
role. then the rest of the ensemble was good as well. so with this I gave
it a score of four out of five.
Visuals: 5/5
The visuals were
so amazing from the pathway to the phantoms lair to the Chandelier's
"mishap". since i try t keep my reviews spoiler free I
won't talk in detail about the all the interesting stuff that the set did but the visuals and the transitions were flawless and quite possibly my favorite part of the show.
ACTING/PERFORMERS: 3/5
This show was really let down b some weak casting choices. I am not going to say they did terrible they put on a really great show I just thought that there was something missing. I feel like it came down to the fact that phantom wasn't as strong as he should have been and then affected everyone else's performance.
STORY 4/5
The story centers on Christine as she struggles with her inner darkness known as the phantom and her old friend Raoul. She falls in love with the darkness until she starts to fear it. She then falls for Raoul who say he will protect her. the rest of the show is the love triangle between the three. and being that there is the story of the Phantom "Running" the opera and the people trying to keep it open.
OVERALL 3/5
The show was really good and entertaining. It was just missing something that would have made It great i can't saw exactly what it was but the show was missing the spectacle
TOTAL 3.8/5
VERDICT:
MY verdict was the show was enjoyable but missing something maybe it was missing the Broadway Magic that the show so great. The show is a must see but if you don't get the chance don't worry about it. but if you get the opportunity to see it on Broadway then do it.
